In 1982, Don Ed Hardy and Francesca Passalacqua created Hardy Marks Publications. Their first publication, Tattootime — New Tribalism, spearheaded a new era of tattoo publishing. To say that Hardy Marks Publications created the genre of tattoo publishing is not an overstatement. For four decades, it was the salient voice for the tattoo arts. Not only did Hardy Marks record the genius art and writing of the Godfather of Modern Tattooing — Ed and Francesca documented and amplified numerous artists from all over the world, spanning many decades, continents and cultures. Many of us would not have been introduced to the world of tattooing without their publications. Hardy Marks Publications is truly The First Name in Tattoo Books.
"After meeting Ed Hardy in 1998, I was lucky to be mentored by him in the fields of tattoo publishing, writing, exhibitions and events. He was hugely supportive, introducing me to many people and encouraging me to always 'shoot for the top.' I am lucky to have worked with Ed on many projects over the years and even now, I often reflect on the teachings and encouragement he gave me. Maybe this is something I will one day write about. In the meantime, I always think what Ed would do with every word, every project, every book." — Taki
In 2023, the decision was made to pass the company on. At this point, Ed and Francesca were fully retired but wanted Hardy Marks to carry on. In their ultimate generosity, they offered the company and its library to us. We were, and continue to be elated — and feel the passing of the company from one husband and wife team to another held special meaning. We are honored to accept this charge and will strive to continue in the manner in which we think Ed and Francesca would see fit. We will be reprinting many of the original classics, many of which have become unattainable for many in the collector market, as well as create new timely material, all the while keeping in mind Ed's mission of advancing our art and culture!
